Intimate Conversation with Shelia E. Lipsey

Ella:  A Legacy is something that is handed down from one period of time to another period of time. Finish this sentence- My writing offers the following legacy to future readers...
My writing offers the following legacy to future readers.....words in print can never be taken away, even after our physical bodies have gone on eternally. As much as I am sorrowful about the recent deaths of authors such as E. Lynn Harris and the first AA Romance Novelist, Elsie B. Washington, there works will forever live on. My books are my legacy. They not only showcase my talent to the world, but they will forever linger in the lives of my children, grandchildren and on and on. I envision that perhaps one day after I have met my demise, that someone, somewhere, in the distant future will pick up a book and they will note the author is Shelia E. Lipsey.

From one generation to the next, words change lives.  From one generation to the next, our words speak volumes about the past, present and future. Words are powerful. They are even more powerful when they are written. That’s why the Bible and what God says inside the Bible can never be taken away or destroyed. It is written, God says, man shall not live by bread alone. Even God uses the word written. God says my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. The word of God also says "Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he who runs may read it. I write not only because I have to write because it is God’s gift and purpose to me and for me, but I write because there are so many thoughts, feelings, and emotions inside of me that are eager to give birth.

Everyone leaves a legacy.  Everyone has a choice whether the legacy they leave for the future is one that will positively or negatively impact families, loved ones and the world. I choose to leave a legacy of the redeeming love, mercy and grace of Jesus Christ.

Ella:  Introduce us to your book, Beautiful Ugly. Beautiful Ugly is the story of three close friends. Each one of them has life challenges, and each of them love, encourage and support each other through the good and the bad. Sometimes we look in the mirror, like Layla does in Beautiful Ugly, and we see an ugly image of ourselves. We fail to see the beauty that God has created. Or we may be like Envy, whose life is based on her name. She struggles with who she really is and why the person she sees in the mirror is not the beautiful, intelligent, smart woman that God made her to be. Instead she sees a young woman who has deep, dark secrets that only she and God know about.

As for Kacie, she equates beauty to having a man. She looks in the mirror and she sees a physically handicapped woman with a bad limp, and six children with six different baby daddies. Her vision of herself is one of low self-esteem and self-worth. How do they face the problems of life? How do they look at themselves and see that they are all wonderful creatures designed by God. When will they learn that beauty comes in so many different ways that even the human eye cannot conceive? Three friends struggle to learn their true identity that only God can define for them.

Ella:  Introduce us to your message and the main characters.
The main characters in Beautiful Ugly are three, 30 year old women. They have been good friends for eleven years. There is Layla Hobbs, who has a singing voice that could easily give Jennifer Hudson a run for the money. She is the lead singer in her church choir, but she battles some serious issues over her size. Envy Wilson is a beautiful, intelligent successful business woman, who is also very promiscuous, something her friends do not know about her. She also has a deep, dark secret that haunts her life. Kacie Mayweather, is a part time cashier, lives on Section 8 and has six children by six different men. She has real self-esteem issues because of her physical disability of cerebral palsy. The message in Beautiful Ugly can only be determined by the person who reads the book and dares to stand before the mirror and see themselves for who they are and for how God created them, which is fearfully and wonderfully made.

Ella:  Are your characters from the portrayal of real people?
Yes, my stories are from the portrayal of real people because that is the way I write. I write about every day people, so that somewhere, someone will pick up one of my novels and be able to identify with someone in the book, or know of someone like my characters. That is the essence of my gift of writing. I call it perfect stories about imperfect people.

Ella:  What inspired you to write this story? I write stories according to what God places in my spirit to write. At first, a title is given to me, and from that point, God orchestrates the words on the pages. Beautiful Ugly is such an everyday story for many women in the world today. We all have issues of some kind with our outward appearances whether we consider ourselves fine, thick or ugly and fat. Society just about bases everything on outward appearances, which is not the way it should be. Unfortunately, it is what it is; the world is warped when it comes to defining the difference in Beauty and Ugly.

Ella:  What issues in today's society have you addressed in the book?
Beautiful Ugly addresses issues of how the world views individuals based on outward appearances. It discusses issues of low self-esteem, self-consciousness, secrets that we hide from the closest of friends and families, and the importance of loving one’s self.

Ella: Was it difficult to complete the novel?
Beautiful Ugly, surprisingly was not difficult to write. Having a physical disability of my own, I was easily able to get into the lives of my characters. I faced many of the same type of problems and issues they have; not all of them, but I can say that looking around today, I saw something of my characters in everyone my path crosses.

Ella:  Why did you decide to pick the Christian fiction genre for your book? I did not pick Christian fiction as my genre. Christian fiction picked me. When I self published my first novel back in 2000, I called it inspirational because at that time there was no such thing as AA Christian fiction, at least not that I recall. I started out with the great fiction authors like Victoria Christopher Murray, Vanessa Griggs and Jacqueline Thomas. They have taken their writings to a much higher level and enjoyed tremendous success. Knowing and seeing how God has prospered them in their genre of writing, gives me hope to rise to their level of greatness and beyond.

Ella:  What is your most valuable lesson about the publishing industry? The publishing industry can afford to be very choosy about who they offer a book deal. Today, the AA market and non AA markets too, are bombarded with a flood of authors. It is an industry that I believe will forever remain, and I believe we will see an even larger influx of self published authors coming on the literary scene.

Ella:  What writers inspire you and why? I am a J. California Cooper fan because her writing is so pure. What I mean by pure is that she is able to weave a story that compels readers to her character(s). She is one that will go down in the great history of literature and be talked about in years to come like other great authors such as Faulkner, Washington, Walker, Morrison and so many more.

Ella: What did you hope to accomplish by writing this particular story? What I hoped to accomplish is for those who reader Beautiful Ugly will close the pages of the book and be drawn toward their own inner beauty. I hope that those who do not like the person standing in the mirror, will read Beautiful Ugly and then see the wondrous, unique individual God Himself created him/her to be.

Ella:  Share with us your latest news, awards or upcoming book releases.
Some of my latest news is that I was awarded several times over, the 2009 SORMAG Readers’ Choice Award. I was also awarded the prestigious 2009 Black Pearls Top Book Awards. Beautiful Ugly will be available nationwide August 1, 2009. Also the sequel to My Son’s Wife will be released September 2010 and the title is My Son’s ex-Wife-The Aftermath.

You can contact Shelia E. Lipsey at shelialipsey@yahoo.com  You can learn more about me by visiting my website http://www.shelialipsey.com/  All books are available in bookstores nationwide as well as online at sites such as Amazon.com; bn.com; target.com; Wal-mart.com; Black Expressions.

Poem: In Due Season by Doris Washington

President Barack Obama gave a inspiring speech for his first State of the Union Address last night about keeping the hope, and going forward that through these most challenging times in our country and the world we can and will restore our economy. Hold on to 'hope" even though things may be difficult right now, that today does not have to be your tomorrow. And as we go forward to putting our dreams in action the economy will get better. I have a poem I hope will inspire you that is titled In Due Season. This poem is also from my book Faith, Hope & Love. May you be inspired. And please share this poem with others.

DORIS' POEMS
In Due Season
(Excerpt From Faith, Hope & Love Poems of Inspiration by Doris Washington)

When I think about all the blessings
He brings.
When I think about His Grace- His Love,
I can only stay where he wants me to be.
I cannot doubt him,

No matter what,
No matter the challenges.
And when the storms come,
And it seems as though they will not pass,
I look up to Him to know

He's my help,
He's my friend.
And whatever desires,
I know He will grant.

Yes,
Always- In Due Season

About Pamela Samuels Young
Pamela Samuels Young is a practicing attorney and the author of four legal thrillers. Buying Time, her most recent release, is a scandalous tale of blackmail, murder and betrayal. The book was recently honored by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, which selected Buying Time as its 2010 Literary Award winner in the Fiction category. The lack of women and people of color depicted as hot shot attorneys in the legal thrillers she read motivated Pamela to take a stab at creating the kind of characters she wanted to see. In the process, the former journalist discovered her passion.

A native of Compton, Pamela balances her writing career while working as Managing Counsel for Labor and Employment Law at Toyota Motor Sales, Inc. in Torrance. She is the Fiction Expert for BizyMoms.com and is on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Chapter of Mystery Writers of America. Pamela is a graduate of USC, Northwestern University and UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law.

Pearl Interview: Bernard Boulton

Black Pearls Magazine Intimate Conversations

Ella:  Greetings Mr. Boulton, tell us a little about youself.
My name is Bernard Boulton and I am a man who is in pursuit of his destiny and purpose. I believe that God placed me in the earth to communicate hope through the medium of communication. For twenty five years I have communicated His word through preaching and now I have enlarged that ministry through writing.

Ella: Tell us about your passion for writing.
My passion for writing is ignited by my reading. I love to read and I love to read fiction. Reading fictional accounts about people who have been challenged by life always lights a spark in me to write. When I'm reading others stories those authors become voices in my spirit that pull out of me the narratives that I hear in my head. What God has set in my heart is a desire to write and the many novels that I've read has been the source of motivation for me.

Ella:  What legacy would you say your writing offers future readers?
My writing offers the following legacy to future readers to say yes to your dreams and produce whatever your dreams are spraking to you so that when you leave this world you will leave something behind that will bless others.

Ella:  Where are you from? What is your favorite genre? How did you start your journey?
I was born in Cleveland Ohio and I am living In Danville Virginia. Christian fiction is my favorite genre. I started writing stories when I was ten years old. I wrote stories that stretched my imagination. I remember after watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that I wrote a story about a little boy who went to live in the chocolate factory. In the story I was the little boy. When I reached my teens the interest in writing waned. It was after I went to college at the Cuyahoga Community College and met Dr George Eppley that my interest in writing returned. I did a lot of creative writing in his class and the spark was ignited again.

Ella:  Tell us about your new book, "DO YOU WANNA BE MADE WHOLE?"
This is a story of overcoming the past to live in the future. The main character Pastor James Maxwell is a spiritual father to three men; Theo Dexter, Micheal Cain and Adam Jones. The inspiration of the story is taken from the Bible in St John chapter 5 where Jesus comes to a man and asked him did he want to be made whole. The story is dealing with three men who with the help of Pastor Maxwell goes through the process of being made whole. Throughout the story Pastor Maxwell is transparent as he gives himself as an example of a man who made mistakes in his past and is now using the wisdom from his those failures to teach men that they can overcome.

Ella:  What do you like about your two main characters?
Pastor James Maxwell knows the pain of making poor choices that damages families. He has dedicated his life to helping men avoid the mistakes that he has made in his life. Now he walks through the valley with three of his spiritual sons as they try to find their way to wholeness.  Will Pastor Maxwell be able to help Theo find forgiveness for the one who betrayed him? Can he help Michael who suffered a great tragedy in his life? Will he be able to help Adam face his past and discover a new future?

The two main characters are Pastor Maxwell and Theo Dexter. I like the portrayal of Pastor Maxwell as a gentle giant. He is a man of strength who has a passion for aiding men in their spiritual walk. I like Theo's struggles between doing what he wants to do and doing what is right. In both of these men I like their imperfections but at the end of the day they represent a manner of manhood that I beleive appeals to both men and women.

Ella: How does this book add value to your reader's life?
I hope that this story will add value to people's lives by causing them to celebrate and appreciate what the message of this novel is conveying. I hope that it empowers people who are trying to put the pieces of their lives back together after a crisis and and that it encourages people to know that what they went through yesterday does not have to be everyday in their life.

Ella: Name 3 things that it takes to make a successful author, in your opinion.
In my opinion a successful author is a person who first pursues their writing consistently. Secondly success is having a mentor who is willing to teach you. And third success is writing stories that connect with people in a meaningful way.

Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
In the future you can expect a sequel to DO YOU WANNA BE MADE WHOLE? and a nonfiction book that deals with a topic of interest to a great many people.

“Bankruptcy Ain’t Broke”
(Putting the Pieces Back Together Through Life Lessons)

Interview Scheduled for BAN Radio with Ella D. Curry
 Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM EST

This straight talk book about bankruptcy and the lessons learned was a God ordered process. Theresa, an entrepreneur specializing in event planning, was forced to file bankruptcy in 2006 due to her putting her trust in one client, and not putting her trust in God. She had good credit all of her life but due to the unethical practices of this client, her finances spun out of control. After many phone calls for help from so-called friends and family, the last option was to file bankruptcy to save her home.

Theresa D. Royal, who holds a degree in Small Business Management from Central Pennsylvania College, dispels the myths that everyone who files for bankruptcy has bad credit or is just trying to get out of paying their debts. Bankruptcy “Ain’t” Broke will give a true account about the struggles of bankruptcy and addresses this taboo subject, especially in the African American and Latino communities.

It's a subject that is often whispered about in minority communities but is discussed openly in other ethnic groups. Bankruptcy in most cases can help those who have no way out of a really bad financial situation. She is also the owner of TD Royal Enterprises, LLC, the holding company for her book publishing, event planning, real estate investing and other business ventures she is pursuing, and is the President and CEO of Entrepreneurs and Professionals Network (EPNET), an organization that encourages individuals, especially minorities, to pursue their passion of owning their own businesses.

“Bankruptcy “Ain’t” Broke” Book Synopsis:
Theresa D. Royal was faced with the difficult decision to file bankruptcy in 2006 due to an unethical client and bad business deal. During the timeframe after she initially filed bankruptcy, there were a string of events that were happening in my life and she felt like the weight of the world was on her shoulders. She was even close to committing suicide because of the stress and enormity of the situation and felt utterly and totally alone.

Theresa is a regular person just like you who had no clue what bankruptcy was or how it would affect her life. This book is not a rag to riches story. It is a true account of her filing bankruptcy and the struggles she has dealt with emotionally and financially over the past three years and how she is dealing with it even to this present day. She gives down to earth, positive perspective to those who are on the verge of filing, have already filed, know someone who has filed or someone having a tough financial situation.

Advance Praise For Bankruptcy "Ain't" Broke:
"When I began reading “Bankruptcy “Ain’t” Broke” by Ms. Theresa Royal I was initially surprised, then in awe, and finally honored. Surprised because even though the title suggests failure, the book is filled with hope and faith. In awe of the courage and strength in the character of Theresa to be willing to share the innermost fears and doubts the rest of us will do anything to keep hidden--even from ourselves. Finally, honored to know such a young, talented, beautiful and blessed "Sista."

Professionally speaking, this is a unique and honest view of this extraordinary legal process. The advice on how to approach the process emotionally and legally is invaluable. And the most important statement--not just financially but spiritually--is in the title “Bankruptcy “Ain’t” Broke”. Thank you Theresa Royal!”
---- Hon. Beverly Hayes-Sipes, District Court, Detroit, Michigan

“I recently finished reading “Bankruptcy "Ain't" Broke”. I would like to personally thank Theresa for sharing so much of her personal life in this fabulous book. I know the book will help many others, even in ways she did not intend. As an example, I often help myself by helping others help themselves, but to this point, I rarely divulge many (if any) of my past struggles. “Bankruptcy "Ain't" Broke” has challenged me to include personal tales of my struggles when mentoring others. I look forward to part 2 (Book 2).”

Have the Faith of Children by LindarInsights

I have a toddler who loves Monster Trucks. I mean truly loves Monster Trucks. At three he could name his favorite trucks, Grave Digger, Blue Thunder, Maxium Destruction. I even know that Dennis Anderson drives Grave Digger. It was crazy because I had no clue what a Monster Truck was. My father was flipping through the channels one day and on the Speed Channel was a Monster Truck Show. Well needless to say at Grandpa's House that is what my son watches.

When I would go to Walmart I would pick him up two and thought I was doing good. At $3.97 a piece I could handle a couple of trucks every now and then. Recently I sat down with Ty and asked him what he wanted for Christmas. His response was simply more Monster Trucks. He named the ones he wanted most, Taz and El Toro Loco. So in my mind I was set. If I bought him his favorite 10 Ty would be good for Christmas, of course along with my favorite pajamas from Target.

My co-workers and I are pretty close. We talk about our children and of course we discussed Christmas and what are children were expecting. One day I heard God speak to me before entering my school building. He said, "Arlinda don't take anything in the building with you. There is something you need to bring out today." I listened and I kept my things in the car.

As I sat at my desk, that morning, my co-worker enters my classroom with a box and a bag. He set them down and says, "This is for Ty." When I looked in the bag I immediately knew that I would not be purchasing any Monster Trucks for Ty. Not only were there over 40 trucks, but there were also books, videos and Hot Wheel Race Cars sets. And yes, Taz and El Toro Loco were in the bag. Ty nows has a collection of various sizes of Monster Trucks. They are in the parking garage in front of my fire place. lol

One of my favorite prayers is the Prayer of Jabez...Oh! That You bless me indeed....Ty knew to ask in faith and expect it. He didn't get the ten mommy was going to give he received way more. If a child can ask in faith and expect it shouldn't we be able to do the same?

I am asking in faith and expecting to be blessed indeed and for my territory to be enlarged. How about you? I am taking my faith to that next level of expectancy.

Xavier Preston is tall, dark, and handsome, and the problem is that he knows it. He has always been more than willing to accommodate their needs and desires; however, his womanizing days have finally ended. He's engaged to a beautiful woman, Kendall, and he's decided to walk the straight and narrow. Or has he?

(Reporter questioning Pilar)

Reporter: Pilar, have you seen or talked to Xavier Preston recently?

Pilar: No, I haven't talked to him since the trial. He can't have any contact with me or come within 50 feet.

Reporter: Mr. Preston repeatedly stated during his trial that you stalked him for months. Any comments to those allegations?

Pilar: Xavier knows the truth and I have no idea why he would speak such horrible comments and attempt to assassinate my character. My only crime was loving him.

Reporter: Do you have any regrets or regret the day you met Mr. Preston?
Pilar: No, of course not. I have absolutely no regrets when it comes to Xavier Preston. You guys can't seem to understand that despite everything, I love Xavier, with all my heart. He makes me smile, brightens up my day; Xavier Preston is my soul mate and one day he will realize that and come to his senses. I can wait, that's easy.

Reporter: After everything that has transpired, I think I speak for our viewing audience, how can you say that?

Pilar: . . . because it's true. Every relationship has its ups and downs. Xavier didn't mean to do those horrible things to me and I forgive him for that. I believe that eventually we'll be together because our paths will cross again.

Reporter: Xavier. Xavier Preston. Have you seen or talked to Pilar?

Xavier: No, I haven't and don't have any desire or intentions to do so, now or later. I'm trying to put all that behind me and move on with my life. Pilar is a nightmare that is behind me now.

Reporter: Do you have any regrets or regret the day you met Pilar?

Xavier: Hell yeah! What do you think? I regret the day I received the first email. . .if I could rewind time, I wouldn't have opened it to begin with; I would have pressed delete. Pilar almost ruined my life with her behavior and I know she is truly dangerous.

Reporter: From all reports, you had a relationship with her. You are an intelligent man; didn't you see any signs in the beginning that something was wrong?

Xavier: I admit, I was weak; I've never denied having a sexual relationship with her. After all, Pilar is a beautiful, intriguing woman. However, I never saw it coming, at least not in the beginning. She came across as a normal, sane, intelligent woman. I know better now. I never imagined the monster she would become before it was all said and done; not in a million years.

Reporter: How are your book sales? I hear readers are flocking to the stores to purchase, Diary of a Stalker, the inside scope of what really happened.

Xavier: Couldn't be better. You know what they say, drama sells books.

Pearl Interview: Keleti Sanon

Book spotlight: Another Chance, Maybe the Last
by Keleti Sanon

About author and community leader Keleti Sanon
For Keleti Sanon, home is Africa but he has resided in the United States for over 20 years. As an immigrant, he faced many hardships. He needed a place to live and a way to survive. Unable to read, write, speak or comprehend the English language he understood the need of education if he was to make it in the United States.

In the early days of his arrival in Harlem, New York, Keleti worked as a cab driver, car washer and security guard all while dreaming of going to college and making something of his life. It was not only a dedication to himself that fueled his desire to better himself, but becoming an educated and successful man would help greatly when his brothers and sisters followed him from Africa.

Working full-time, attending classes, studying and helping his family, he was many times exhausted and overwhelmed. Still, Keleti never thought of quitting. Most days began with only four hours of sleep followed by work and a full course load only to return home and start all over again. Sometimes there was not enough to eat, but obstacles only pushed him further to succeed.

He obtained his G.E.D., graduated from college with a degree in Aviation Mechanics and a second Applied Science degree in Biomedical Electronics. His family is scattered across the United States, but all of them are successful and very happy.  Keleti came to the United States and made a name for himself; proving dreams can come true and that sacrifice, self-discipline and having the desire to accomplish your goals is all you need to succeed.

What will you find when you read through the pages of Keleti Sanon's Another Chance, Maybe the Last?

In the foreword, author Marilynn Griffith talks about her own experience as a child of an African father and an African-American mother and her desire to know more about Africa. Sanon book, in her opinion, is the beginning stepping stone to receive that knowledge.

African-American: Understanding the Divide
Sanon sets out to explore the African American's painful legacy of slavery and the repercussions that are still felt as a result of it. In addition, Sanon illustrates, African immigrants' journey to America, and how Africans' and African Americans' culture separates them.

Africa’s Lost Children: Slavery’s Legacy
Sanon delves further into the history of slavery, detailing the economic causes of it and the cultural and psychological ramifications of it.

The Mother Land and Uncle Sam: Discovering African Identity in America
Sanon debunks the myths of Africa and offers and examination of Africa's geography. He concludes this section by discussing the prowess it took to strip a people of their African identity upon their arrival to America and offers suggestions on how African Americans can begin to embrace this identity once again.

It Takes a Village: Traditions of Respect and Rearing
In this chapter, Sanon looks at differences between Africans and African-Americans in regards to crime, education, and respect for elders and for self. By closely looking at life in America and the village life of Africa, Sanon notes the distinctions but calls for the reconciliation of heritage and identity to bring the two cultures together.  ISBN-10: 0615305075   |   ISBN-13: 978-0615305073

Intimate Conversation with author Keleti Sanon

Ella:  What motivated you to create this type of book now?

The thing that led me to write this book, is that on many occasions here in the US, I have been ask the question by NON-BLACK people… "Why do black Americans call themselves African-American while they don’t know anything about Africa"? That question made me very uncomfortable every time I thought about it. For me, my cousins (African Americans) have taken a step closer to where their ancestors came from and I’m just proud of them. Since I was asked that question more then once, it started to bother me not to do something about it, I then decided to inform my African American brothers and sisters about as much as possible about my culture and tradition; specifically African culture and general tradition in general. They just have to know certain realities about our culture and tradition. I am not trying to make them feel that they have to practice the traditions and cultures, unless they desire to, but I want them to see the good and bad and judge for themselves.

Also, I want my African Brothers and Sisters to know that our mission in this great country is Yes, to better ourselves but I argue that all of us have another cultural mission and that is to inform our African American brothers and sisters about anything they need to know about Africa .

Ella:  In regards to Another Chance, Maybe the Last  who should read this book?
Everyone can read this book, although it is specifically addressed to blacks with origins of Africa , the knowledge can be applied to many other races: Chinese/Chinese American, European/European American, Asian/Asian American, and Irish/Irish American. Each of us can learn something from our original blood line in regard to culture and tradition so that we can inform our children and their children. Education in this area prevents us from carrying a title that we know nothing about.

Ella:  What impact will this book have on the community?
My book will help people to understand that there is nothing to be ashamed about in associating themselves with the source of their origin, even if those places may not be comparable with their living style today but they should remember that we came from the people before us, and as life goes on we need to educate ourselves to know what made today possible. Knowing more about yourself gives you a better understanding of life, makes you a more loving person, makes you love the next person better, and boosts your self control and self behavior, bringing a good attitude in the community.

Ella:  What's your underlying message in Another Chance, Maybe the Last?
African American brothers and sisters have suffered in this country for so many generations. From slavery, losing their African dialect, culture and tradition, they have endured SO many struggles. They fought for so long for their family and future generations to have justice with the help of civil right leaders like Martin Luther king and others and have made today much better than the past.

For me or others Africans to come today in this great country and enjoy all of the benefits; schooling, equal opportunity, and many other federal and state benefits available to blacks without being part of the fight that took place to get all these...makes me feel that I owe my brothers and sister something...and that something is to inform them as long I live, about the GIFT of Africa. I want to inform them about my Mandingo tribe specifically but also give them the general knowledge of African culture and tradition. Armed with this information in the midst of the abundance of Africans coming today from all part of Africa to the US , no one will again question them not knowing anything about Africa but they will strongly carry the title: African American.

Ella:  What issues in today's society have you addressed in the book?
I have addressed one main issue in this book, that we as humans today, with the rise of technology have a tendency not to connect with past (that seems too old for most to think about), even though we know for a fact where our ancestors came from, we don’t want to associate ourselves with those places.

I believe parents should be doing more to first of all learn enough about their roots in order to teach their children, so that their children don't think that we fell from sky. We are destroying the original structure of human behavior and attitude in society. You will see around the country, African or African American relationships NOT succeeding for the majority of the time, because of the culture differences; the bad thing is that sometimes children get caught in the middle.

You also see Africans or African Americans avoiding each other and preferring to marry others with the exact same racial background rather than facing the culture issues and coming to a common ground or teachable level on both sides.

Ella: What do you want to see happen with this book?
My primary quest in publishing this book is hopefully to be able to reach and educate as many people as possible about Africa, so that we all in turn can educate our youth and others to have a better future generation in this big melting pot. Everyone should carry one; what that means is that we should ensure that our future generation knows about their origin so that they don’t feel like they fell from the sky.

We all have to remember that what happened in Africa a longtime ago matters here today in the US. Today the Africans are here in the US, and we are not going anywhere, my hope, is that we will be history teachers to our cousins.

Ella: Who did you  see as your target audience for purchases? Why?
I primarily wrote this book for everyone from any cultural background. The same issues can be raised in each culture; but specifically for people with ties to Africa specially the African Americans. Why? Because African Americans have the chance that most other black nations outside of Africa don’t have!  That is the chance to have so many Africans coming to the USA from all parts of Africa; which is actually not the same even in Africa. In Africa you, for the most part, may just see citizens from surrounding countries that closely surround yours; but not those from all parts of Africa.

I have been only to about 7 countries in Africa, but I have met about 30 citizens of other countries that I have never been to in Africa. Right here in the US, I have learned the similarities of culture and traditions to mine. Brothers and sisters can even learn from each other here in this melting pot.

I also hope that this book will help both sides to do better in their relationship, especially where children are involved. My hope is that in these situations, we will not let this culture clash take over. I would love to give something back that our brothers and sisters lost due to slavery.

Ella:  What sets your book apart from other books in your genre?
My book may be unique in the fact that the theme is based on all of us wanting and needing to know something about our culture and tradition that made today possible. Everyone needs to know that, it doesn't matter if you are black or white, the US is a big melting pot of tradition and culture that I believe will eventually create another culture and tradition of its own with all these mixtures. The new culture will be so new that it will cause us to forget the old one completely, so we have ANOTHER CHANCE, MAYBE THE LAST to reclaim our history. If, we don’t do something, that new culture will be based on technology like we are seeing today, fast life, marketing, no respect for the next person and everyone will live in they own world.

In my book, we will explore common issues, between Africans and African Americans here in the US, such as : "why not many of them get married",  how we children are raised in Africa, family ties in Africa, education in Africa, African celebrations and culture, the legacy of slavery and our journey in coming to America.

Ella: What was the most powerful chapter or scene in the book for you?
Each chapter carries a very powerful and unique message. You will explore a very typical Mandingo family daily life activities, from kids getting up in the morning getting ready for school. You will also learn what for breakfast, lunch, dinner. The following will also are well explained: dating, the childbirth blessing, the marriage ceremony and it procedures, crimes rate, divorce, roles of the oldest brother, education, color conflicts, family size, health care, Aids, welfare, and Technology.

There are many messages in this book. How to know more about ourselves, how to inform our kids where our roots or ancestors from, how to respect elders, how to care for our elderly parents, how to help out family members with issues other than to abandon them and how to build a strong family, just to name a few. I also want people to grasp how to focus and make their dream come true.

Ella: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No. I would not change anything in this book. I definitely have a lot more books forthcoming; fiction, non fiction, tales and stories from all over Africa . These forthcoming books will give my readers a sense and flavor of Africa, it people, the day to day life in the villages, town cities and issues they face on the day to day basis but ANOTHER CHANCE, MAYBE THE LAST will help my readers clears some misconceptions about Africa and it lovely people, and want to reassure my African Americans cousins and their heritage. I plan to continue to write and ensure my readers that I will be here informing you until we both understand that we have a common ground and we need to share our heritage .

Ella: What is the best piece of advice you would give to an aspiring author?
If you have been blessed enough by GOD to educate or share with others, please don t give up on that dream. Stay on it until someone gets it and share. Sharing is what we can all do to preserve what is preservable, so that future generations can live in peace together.

Never What it Seems II: A Mother’s Love

by Diane Martin

Never What it Seems II: A Mother’s Love is a story of sacrifice, dedication, and unconditional love. Dee and AJ, best friends, thrown together by circumstances beyond their control are up against their biggest challenge ever – motherhood. Dee, mother of two adopted daughters, grew-up in a household void of love. She struggles each day to juggle a career and a family that desperately requires twenty-four hour attention, but she can’t assume a role foreign to her.

Raised in a household with an alcoholic father and an absentee mother, Dee has no idea how to handle these girls who were placed into her life by God to eliminate the loneliness created by a husband, her first love, who betrayed her by living a life on the “down-low.”

AJ, her best friend and mother of one, is married to the man of her dreams. A union that birthed a beautiful little boy struggles to survive. Born to a father who thought she was put on earth to be his surrogate wife and a mother who sat quietly by, ignoring the screams and cries for help that came from her bedroom at night, AJ wants to love her son, but can’t because she doesn’t know how. She reaches out to her husband for help, but he’s MIA due to situations beyond his control. In a role unfamiliar to them, life and experience will take them on a journey that will lead them back to the place where it all started.

Their journey continues...
